Scholarships & Awards

Students interested in applying for one of these prestigious scholarships should begin the application process months in advance of the campus deadline. Assistance with the application process is available from the staff in the URCA Office, 2105 North Hall.


Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarship Program
The program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated students to pursue opportunities available to them and to be courageous in the selection of a graduated course of study. Each scholar receives $2,000 to help with the costs of applying to graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school. There are no geographic restrictions on the use of the scholarship, and recipients are allowed to supplement the award with other scholarships, assistantships and research grants. Scholars are encouraged to begin graduated study as soon as possible following graduation from college, and must utilize all of the funding within five years of completion of undergraduate studies.

Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Junior Fellows Program
Award: Salary and benefits.
Designed to provide a substantive work experience for students who have a serious career interest in the area of international affairs. Students will be hired to work at the Endowment on a full-time basis for period of one year. Applicants are accepted only from graduating college seniors or individuals who have graduated within the past year and must have completed a significant amount of course work in area of international politics and economics.

The Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research
This award is given to an outstanding graduating senior with distinction as an undergraduate researcher, and to a faculty member with distinguished record of mentoring undergraduate research. Faculty and student candidates for this award must be nominated by an academic department or program, or by an organized research unit.

The Churchill Scholarship
Established in 1959 at the recommendation of Winston Churchill himself, the Winston Churchill Foundation offers America students of exceptional ability and outstanding achievement the opportunity to pursue one year of graduate studies in engineering, mathematics, or the sciences at Churchill College, the University of Cambridge. The Foundations offers twelve Churchill Scholarships each year. The scholarship covering all University and College tuition and fees and, in addition, students receive a living allowance and a travel allowing of up to $1,000.

Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship
Awarded annually to outstanding students from across the nation. Institutions may nominate up to two seniors or alumni who have graduated within the past five years. The awards provide funding for tuition, room and board, required fees, and books up to $50,000 annually for up to six years. Scholarship length and amounts will vary for each recipient based on several factors, including costs to the institution he or she attends, the degree sought and the amount of financial assistance provided by the institution. Scholars may use the award to attend any accredited graduate school in the U.S. or abroad to pursue any graduate degree or any professional degree including medicine, law, or business.

Barry Goldwater Scholarship
Amount of award varies. This scholarship is for juniors or seniors interested in a career in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering. Campus nomination is required. Interested students should contact the URCA office well in advance of the deadline.

The Fiona Goodchild Award for Excellence as a Graduate Student Mentor of Undergraduate Research - Given to outstanding graduate students who have distinguished themselves through their excellence in, and contribution to, undergraduate research supervision, and to encourage others to become involved in these research efforts. The graduate students must be nominated by an academic department or program, or by an organized research unit.

Marshall Scholarship
This program offers intellectually distinguished young Americans a chance to study in the United Kingdom, while being introduced to the British way of life and British social and academic values. Up to forty scholarships will be awarded which are tenable at any British University and cover two years of study in any discipline, at either undergraduate or graduate level.

George J. Mitchell Scholarships
Scholarships are for graduate-level studies at participating institutions of higher learning in Ireland. The participating universities contribute the cost of tuition and room. In addition, each Scholar will receive a stipend of $11,000 for other expenses.

NSEP Study Abroad Scholarships
Program provides U.S. undergraduates with the resources and encouragement needed to acquire skills and experience in less commonly studied languages and cultures. Applicants must engage in a study abroad program that meets UCSB standards. Depending on financial need, awards may cover up to $10,000 of the costs of the study abroad program.

The Pahl "Making a Difference" Award
Established by UCSB alumni, Louise and Stephen Pahl, the "Making a Difference" Award will be given at commencement to honor an upper-division student, preferably a graduating senior in the social sciences, who is involved as a volunteer in community and/or campus-related activities, and who has written a course-related paper which applies learning theories to real-world contemporary issues.

Rhodes Scholarship
One of the most prestigious awards, funds two or three years of post-bachelor study at Oxford University in Great Britain. The award covers educational and living expenses. Initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902, the scholarships bring outstanding students from nineteen countries and five continents to Oxford University. Rhodes Scholars may pursue either a second bachelor's degree or a higher degree. Selectors look for outstanding intellectual and academic achievement (typically a minimum 3.9 GPA). Applicants must also show integrity of character, interest in and concern for others, leadership ability, and the energy to fully use their talents.

The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans
Given to provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New American to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. The fellowships are grants for up to two years of graduate study in the United States. The recipients are chosen on a national competitive basis. Thirty fellowships will be awarded each year. The Donald A. Strauss Scholarship Foundation
The Donald A. Strauss Public Service Scholarship Foundation was created as a memorial to the late Donald Strauss, who demonstrated a strong, lifelong commitment to public service and education. The Foundation annually awards fifteen $10,000 scholarships to California college juniors who've reflected a similar commitment.

Harry S Truman Scholarship
For junior level students, this scholarship is awarded to individuals who are committed to careers in government, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors, education or elsewhere in the public service. Students are provided with financial support for graduate study, leadership training, and fellowship with other students who are committed to making a difference through public service.

Morris K Udall Foundation
The Morris K. Udall Scholarship provides up to $5,000 for educational expenses to sophomores and juniors who either 1) have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment; or 2) are Native Americans or Alaska Natives in fields related to Native health care or tribal public policy. The Udall Foundation seeks outstanding students who demonstrate, through their areas of study and public service activities, a commitment to and potential for making significant contributions in their fields.
