Faculty Research Assistance Program (FRAP)
The FRAP Directory provides students with information about current research projects, the faculty and senior researchers conducting them, and the academic or other preparation that is necessary for undergraduate participation in the projects.  The Directory is available on-line on our web page (look under Support for Research and Creative Projects). FRAP-designated courses are available only in Letters and Science and the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education.  To enroll in the appropriate course, students must contact the professor’s department.

September 6 Campus Deadline

British Marshall Scholarships
For study at any British university in the United Kingdom.

Mitchell Scholarships
For graduate-level studies at institutions in Ireland.

Rhodes Scholarship
For undergraduate or graduate study at Oxford University.

Academic and personal skills of the highest level are required.  Application must be reviewed and endorsed by home institution.  For UCSB applicants, an endorsement review is coordinated by the URCA Office, 2105North Hall.  Inquiries and preparation should begin months in advance of the application deadline.

September 25 Event

UC Center in Sacramento General Informational Meeting
Students maintain full-time enrollment at UCSB while working in a structured internship with an agency or organization of their choice in Sacramento. The Program is offered during the fall, winter, and spring quarters. This meeting will cover the application process and guidelines for participation in the UCCS Program. Location, date and time TBA

UCSB Washington Center Program General Informational Meeting
Find out what it takes to get admitted to the UCDC Program. Hear from returning students who will share their personal experiences in DC. Learn how to get a head start on the application process and how to secure an internship. Location, date and time TBA

URCA Project Grant Proposal Workshop
The workshop will cover how to prepare a strong proposal, including budget preparation, and what the reviewers will be looking for in the proposals. Location, date and time TBA

October 11 Campus Deadline

The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans
Given to provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New American to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. The fellowships are grants for up to two years of graduate study in the United States. The recipients are chosen on a national competitive basis. Thirty fellowships will be awarded each year. www.pdsoros.org. Interested students should contact the URCA Office months in advance of the campus deadline.

UCSB Washington Program
The UCSB Washington Program provides a unique opportunity in experiential learning.  It is a residential program that combines research, internships and optional elective coursework.  Designed for undergraduates in their third or fourth year at UCSB, the program assumes that students have completed a significant part of their upper-division and major courses, and that their internships and research projects will serve to enhance their academic study.  This is not a program designed for any one major.  Students in all fields are welcome and encouraged to apply.  Please contact the UCDC Peers at ucdc@ltsc.ucsb.edu, or stop by their office at 2110 North Hall.

October 29 Proposal Deadline

Grants for Undergraduate Research and Creative Projects--Open to All Majors
Awards are offered to support major research and creative projects, including research-related travel.  One-time grants of up to $1,000 are available for eligible students.  The competition is open to undergraduates in the College of Letters and Science, College of Creative Studies, and College of Engineering, regardless of class standing or major. Full program description, eligibility and application instructions can be found on the URCA web site.

November 2 Deadline for Winter 2008 Participation

The University of California Center in Sacramento (UCCS) Program is a residential program that combines an internship with research, and coursework. In addition, students have the opportunity to observe public policy processes firsthand in our state's capital. Admission to the UCCS Program is open to upper-division undergraduates from all majors. Students maintain full-time enrollment at UCSB while working in a structured internship with an agency or organization of their choice in Sacramento. SCCUR 2007 (Southern California Conference on Undergraduate Research) @ CSULA
The SCCUR promotes and celebrates undergraduate achievement in research, scholarship, and creative activity done in partnership with faculty or other mentors. Recognizing that a vigorous, innovative, and robust society draws its strength from the efforts and interactions of a diversity of cultures and talents, SCCUR welcomes participants from all disciplines and through its sponsoring of annual conferences and by other means, seeks to bring them together to display their accomplishments and to stimulate, teach, and learn from each other.

November 28 Campus Deadline

Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
Post-baccalaureate Fellowship
Full-time research assistantship before starting graduate studies.  Total immersion in international affairs, in such areas as: international economic reform, democracy building, migration/refugees/citizenship, nuclear nonproliferation, and related issues. Application materials may be obtained after October 1 from staff in the URCA Office, 2105 North Hall.

Harry S. Truman Scholarships For junior-level students with high academic achievement and outstanding leadership potential who will pursue careers in public service.

Barry Goldwater Scholarships
For high-ability sophomores or juniors interested in a career in mathematics, natural sciences or engineering. 

National Security Education Program-NSEP
Resources to study abroad in less commonly studied languages and cultures while an undergraduate student. Highly competitive, but obtainable scholarships which require campus nomination.

February 6 Campus Deadline

The Donald A. Strauss Scholarship Foundation
A proposal for a community or public service project, to be carried out during the senior year, is the major focus of the application for the Strauss Scholarship.  This is a $10,000 scholarship that will be used to pay for some of the costs of the public service project as well as for tuition, fees, books, room and board.

Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarship Program
For junior-level students who will be graduating within a year of application and pursing graduate studies in the liberal arts.  Must demonstrate superior standards of intellectual ability and personal promise, and have a documented history of need-based financial aid during undergraduate career.  Award consists of $2,000 to help with costs of applying and traveling to graduate school, plus $30,000 for graduate school support.

The Morris K. Udall Foundation Scholarship
Up to 80 scholarships for up to $5,000 or the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board, whichever is less, are awarded annually nationwide on the basis of merit to TWO groups of students:

  1. Those who are college sophomores or juniors in the current academic year, having outstanding potential, and who study the environment and related fields

  2. Or
  3. Native American and Alaska Native students who are college sophomores or juniors in the current academic year, having outstanding potential, and are in fields related to health care or tribal public policy.

Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship
Awarded annually to outstanding student from across the nation. Institutions may nominate up to two seniors or alumni who have graduated within the last five years. The awards provide funding for tuition, room and board, required fees, and books up to $50,000 annually for up to six years. Scholarship length and amounts will vary for each recipient based on several factors, including costs to the institution he or she attends and the degree sought. Scholars may use the award to attend any accredited graduate school in the U.S. or abroad to pursue any graduate degree or any professional degree including medicine, law, or business.

April 4 Campus Deadline

The Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research
This award is given to an outstanding graduating senior with distinction as an undergraduate researcher, and to a faculty member with distinguished record of mentoring undergraduate research. Faculty and student candidates for this award must be nominated by an academic department or program, or by an organized research unit.

The Fiona Goodchild Award for Excellence as a Graduate Student Mentor of Undergraduate Research
Given to outstanding graduate students who have distinguished themselves through their excellence in, and contribution to, undergraduate research supervision, and to encourage others to become involved in these research efforts. The graduate students must be nominated by an academic department or program, or by an organized research unit.

The Pahl "Making a Difference" Award
Established by UCSB alumni, Louise and Stephen Pahl, the "Making a Difference" Award will be given at commencement to honor an upper-division student in the Division of Social Sciences, preferably a graduating senior, who is involved as a volunteer in community and/or campus-related activities, and who has written a course-related paper (for a course within the Division of Social Sciences) which applies learning theories to real-world contemporary issues.

April 9 Entry Deadline

UCSB Undergraduate Colloquium - May 15
Annual event giving undergraduate students an opportunity to expand their professional-level experiences by presenting their research and creative work with a poster/exhibit presentation.  Any UCSB undergraduate who has recently completed or is actively involved in a project may submit an entry to present at the colloquium. May 23 Proposal Deadline for Summer 2008

Grants for Undergraduate Research and Creative Projects, Letters & Science students only
Funding from various sources available to support small undergraduate projects, including research, creative works and research-related travel that will be conducted or begun in summer.  Full details and the application are available on this web site. Please contact the URCA Office in early Spring for information regarding the URCA summer grant.
