Sponsored by the United States Government, the Fulbright Scholar Program operates in over 130 countries worldwide with the goal of increasing mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other nations.

The traditional Fulbright Scholar Program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each year to study, teach and conduct research. UC Santa Barbara faculty members interested in applying for this program should consult with their Department Chair and/or Divisional Dean. Applications are made directly to the Program, and the annual deadline is August 1.

The Fulbright Program also sponsors programs for non-U.S scholars to visit universities in the United States. If an academic department is contacted by an international Fulbright scholar seeking affiliation at UC Santa Barbara, it is necessary to obtain endorsement from the campus Fulbright Administrative Official, the Executive Dean of the College of Letters and Science, for this affiliation. Please contact Bryant Wieneke for more details.

It is important that UC Santa Barbara only accept scholars whose research programs can be accommodated well on our campus. Occasionally, it is necessary to redirect international scholars to other institutions that are better suited to facilitate their scholarship.

Availability of office and research space must be considered when contemplating hosting a Fulbright scholar on campus. The department is expected to incorporate the Fulbright scholar into the academic life of the department, and to provide her or him with the privileges of using departmental facilities, the library, auditing of classes, and consultation with the faculty without charge.

International Fulbright scholars contribute to the campus goal of internationalization and serve as valuable academic resources to the faculty and students. The salary for Fulbright scholars is paid by the U.S. Government or their home country; thus, they serve here at no charge to the campus.
