Start-up Research Fund Allowance PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Some new Letters and Science faculty appointees receive a research fund allowance as part of their start-up package. The research fund allowance is granted to help new faculty establish their research programs in a timely manner and to aid the transition of the research program from the previous institution to UC Santa Barbara.

The following are examples of appropriate expenditures for this fund:

• hiring an assistant to help set-up the research laboratory, office, and files;
• purchase of supplies necessary to the establishment of the research facility;
• hiring a graduate student to perform library or laboratory research*;
• travel by the faculty member to conduct field research, to do archival work, or to discuss work in progress with colleagues at other institutions or at professional/scholarly meetings;
• travel expenses to bring a research colleague from another institution to UCSB for a research consultation;
• other purposes consistent with the use of 19900 State funds.

*Faculty members hiring a graduate student researcher at 25% time or more are also responsible for fees.

The research fund allowance cannot be used for:

• graduate student recruitment, or graduate student travel to professional/scholarly meetings;
• routine purchase of books;
• purchase of individual scholarly society memberships;
• journal subscriptions;
• faculty summer salary.
