Presented annually, the Constantine Panunzio Distinguished Emeriti Award honors retired faculty members of the 10-campus University of California system for their continued outstanding scholarly work or educational service in the social sciences or humanities.

Professor Wallace Chafe (Linguistics), who retired in 1991, received the award in 2008. He was the 20th UC emeritus professor to receive the award and the third from UC Santa Barbara. Previous recipients included Garret Hardin, an emeritus professor of biological sciences and environmental studies who died in 2003, and the late Robert O. Collins, an emeritus professor of history. Hardin received the award in 1997 and Collins in 2007. Also receiving a 2008 award was Robert Hine, a professor of history at UC Irvine.

A call for nominations is made during the Fall quarter. Nominations are accepted from departmental chairs in a letter outlining the distinctive contribution in scholarship or other educational service made by the nominee since retirement. A copy of the nominee's curriculum vitae should also be included.
Self-nominations are possible; a curriculum vitae should accompany the rationale for nomination.
